The Kooks @ the Palace Theatre, Melbourne. Jan 8th 2009

It seems that the Brits are leaving quite the impression on us Australians. First with Mystery Jets and now The Kooks. Both very different sorts of shows, yet both incredibly entertaining.
Arriving just after the support act, Dash & Will, the room was only half full. Although the wait outside was a long and cold one. Security was unusually tight, pulling up many teens with fake IDs.
Kooks started at roughly 10:30pm, but by about 10 the Palace was full. It was hard to tell whether the crowd was there to listen or look at the Kooks, but it varied. There were a whole range of ages and styles.
Once on stage they began with Always Where I Need To Be which gave the crowd a taste of what was too come. Followed by Matchbox it was already apparent how deserving they are of the raves about their live shows (and I can now safely disagree with a lot of the criticism I have heard and read).
Front man, Luke Pritchard, surprised us all with a stage dive. Although a majority of the people seemed unsure what to do/how to hold him and he eventually slid to the floor, having to crawl through a mass of legs to get back up on stage.
Crowd pleaser Naive pumped everyone up so much so it was hard to even hear the band. But Seaside was truly something special, just as beautiful as I had imagined. They also shared with us something new, an unknown song, which everyone seemed to really get into.
Favourites of the night would have to be Jackie Big Tits and for the very last song of the encore Sofa Song which they almost tricked us into believing they wouldnt play it. I was also impressed with their 45 minutes overtime.
A truly enjoyable night and in the words of a drunken 20-year-old male at the end of the show, fucking awesome.
