Noah and the Whale’s second album, The First Days Of Spring, was released this week. It passionately depicts the break-up between lead singer Charlie Fink and Laura Marling. In it he lays bare his soul skilfully portraying his emotion at every juncture from the moment that he realises it’s the end to the remorse he feels after a one night stand to later resigning himself to his fate. If emotion and heartache could make a sound, this would be it.
Throughout this album a choir sings beautifully arranged harmonies over a backing sound provided by subdued drums, trembling strings and a lethargic but calming lead vocal, stripped bare of feeling. His depiction of love, and its fragility, reminds us that love can cause such great happiness and sadness in one collective emotion.
The high point for me comes in My Door Is Always Open when Charlie makes one final realisation that, in one line, demolishes all the built up emotion that came before it. A perfect end to the album.
With this album, Noah and the Whale have created a radical change in pace that is as far from 5 Years Time as is possible. But it’s not a change born from maturity. This is a not a band that have grown up, this is a band that are simply dealing with the different situations that they come across. This album is musically elite, exemplary and perfectly produced and is worth every penny.
