Chaka Demus [EP], Jamie T
Released 31/08/09 [buy it]

Panic Prevention largely passed me by, barely registering in my consciousness, I’m ashamed to say. Gradually in the two and a half years since it’s release I have listened at random occasions to him, and seen his showcase live. I’ve been turned.
This new EP comes a week before Jamie’s next album,Kings and Queens, and if it’s a sample of his new material then whoosh, it’s grand! Title track Chaka Demus features a wicked intro from the trademark bass guitar that, whilst not being as brand new as it was, offers a familiarity that is soon to be shattered. Forgot Me Not opens with a spiky guitar which is joined by a female vocalist singing what will become the chorus and is all surpassed by a rolling bass line and some tribal backing vocals that eventually usher in a strained Mr T. Jamie’s sings in harmony throughout Planning Spontaneity- a track that is expertly crafted and represents, in title and theme, the rest of the EP combined. When They Are Gone is a big track that unlike the three tracks offers the biggest link back to Jamie T’s previous work.
All in all this EP took me by surprise and I wasn’t ecpecting to like it as much as I do!
