I have to tell you about the new music I’ve received this week, but first, I need to talk about the BBC, U2 and Spotify.
Did you hear that U2 have a new album out? The BBC, with its catchy slogan U2=BBC, has jumped into bed with Universal music to promote the album with the following coverage:
Culture Show special (BBC Two), Live Lounge (BBC Radio 1), Interview by Jo Whiley (BBC Radio 1), Interview by Chris Evans (BBC Radio 2), Front Row special (BBC Radio 4) and a 20 minute rooftop concert.
This amounts to hours and hours of free publicity for the album and leads me to wonder what the point is. I’ve heard the album and, put simply, its rubbish. I did laugh when Bono called Chris Martin a wanker, live on air. He must have seen their disgraceful slightly live performance at the Brits.
Super-Steve Lamacq (super because the man is comfortably stretched across radios 1,2 and 6 music), Edith Bowman, Huw Stephens & Rob Da Bank are practically worth the fee on their own but I don’t like seening the fee used in such a commercial manner. I doubt this extensive coverage will end soon. It looks like the machine has only just taken off and has another few weeks of fuel in its tanks yet. Joy of joys.
Today is the first day that I’ve used Spotify. Seems to be great for listening to tracks bundled on to single releases but there is advertising sandwiched in between tracks every now and then. It has just told be about the Glasvegas album, and a random film website. Fun stuff.

I notice usual sell outs Q Magazine have given the U2 album five stars. Do you get the feeling next month there’ll be an interview with U2 in their magazine?
