Florence And The Machine – Lungs
06.07.09 (Island)

To date, Florence and the Machine has released just two singles – the beautifully violent Kiss With A Fist and the anthemic Dog Days Are Over. She has already received a Critics Choice Brit Award and looks set for Mercury Nomination with her debut album Lungs.
The illegal download version of this album crossed our paths last month and is poor poor poor in terms of quality. I’ve been out and spent money on an actual CD and found it to be pure gold. My initial thoughts of it being overproduced I shall put down to the 128kbps samples I heard.
Florence has really proved the critics right with this record. A personal favourites the the new recording of blues track Girl With One Eye (I’ve had a demo since January 08′ thanks to GWFAS).
There are so many female artists post Amy Winehouse who have tried, like Amy did, to create something that is completely them and they have all failed. Until this. With Lungs I feel as if I have a piece of Florence here with me, in the room, wanting to be adored.
What Others Say
“Everyone who has “stolen†the album off my desk is besotted by it. Lungs is a bold bitchslap to the competition – awesome and then some.” The LondonPaper 06.07.09
Listen to Welch singing: “Ill cut your little heart out cause you made me cry,†and youll struggle to recall the last time retribution sounded quite so divine. The Times 04.07.09
Florence Welch’s distinctive voice intertwines beautifully with harps, strings and drums as she sings her inimitable ‘soul inspired indie’ and ‘Tim Burton-style fairytales’. BBC Music Online 29.06.09
The brazen physicality of ‘Howl’ would delight on any dance floor, while ‘My Boy Builds Coffins’ is an enigmatic toe-tapping wonder. The only thing it lacks is a tender tear-jerker, and well, that’s hardly a complaint at all. ‘Lungs’ is downright hair-raising, undeniably sexy and deliciously addictive. Very possibly the album of 2009. Entertainment.ie 03.07.09
Live Dates:
Florence can be appreciated at almost every festival over the summer. She is also starting her own tour in Bristol on September 17th.
