Sky Larkin – The Golden Spike

With 2009 bringing debut albums from great bands such as Dananananaykroyd, Bombay Bicycle Club and Magistrates its looking like a great way to see out a decade.
For those of you that dont know, Sky Larkin are an Indie punk trio from Leeds, who have been compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which cant be a bad thing. I personally place alongside bands like Los Campesinos!, and my favourite band, Johnny Foreigner, with their punkier take on indie music. Opening the album is Fossil, I, a summery, pop punk master class, that relaxes as much as it impresses.
This is the feel of the record as a whole, a shimmering collection of 70s pop punk classics. Single, Molten is a beautiful pop anthem with innocent lyrics that highlight the naivety the band are trying to portray in their music. Other stand out tracks include the brilliant future single, Beeline, set to be released as a download and as a wristwatch (looking forward to seeing how that works) and the amazing Matador, with vocalist Katie Harkin giving Florence (and the machine) Welch a run for her money.
The only real problem with the album is that with all of its 13 tracks being less than 4 minutes long, it feels over before it can really start. With a total run time of just over 35 minutes, the album leaves listeners (well me anyway) longing for more Sky Larkin. Overall, this is a charming and quirky debut from the Leeds trio, thats only drawback is that it doesnt quite deliver enough. 81%.
