Death Cab for Cutie – Narrow Stairs

A few years ago, Death Cab for Cutie signed to Atlantic Records, causing many fans to fear that their beloved soft indie band would ‘sell out’. Fortunately, this idea never came true and the Seattle band ventured to a more larger audience and had success worldwide with their music.

Narrow Stairs is no exception. Although it was not expected, Stairs reminisces back towards Death Cab’s earlier music with a more raw, natural sound that has not been present in their work in while. This may be because main singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard played more instruments in the album than the previous records.Nonetheless, the album offers Death Cab fans a more organic sound with songs such as opener “Bixby Canyon Bridge”, “Talking Bird”, and “Pity And Fear”. Some songs such as “No Sunlight” and “Long Division” have a more upbeat, playfully tone which gives the album a more enriched and stronger feel.

This record may disappoint long-time fans, but all that aside, the album was well written and the more unrestrained sound leaves some fans wanting more. Death Cab for Cutie is currently touring across the U.S. with St. Vincent and with Neil Young in October. They will also be touring in Europe in November, however the supporting band is still unknown. Narrow Stairs is available now.
