I’ve been living with this album now for a good week. I’ve got the download and the gorgeous 12” too, which I only get if an album really means a lot to me.
There is so, so much hype about this band, but what makes all that weird is the way it’s been manifested in the press. Basically in the form of pompous grandiose statements like ‘the best band, EVER’. The kind of statements you’d usually expect to be describing all out ballsy rock and roll groups like Led Zep, or to a lesser extent, oasis.
What we actually find underneath everyone else’s posturing however, is a band with massive production, a poet at the helm, and one of the best collection of songs we’ve had in a good while.
As is the case with most bands that break into the country’s sub conscious, and so receive nationwide adoration, Glasvegas have a bit of a lot of bands in them. Natural, and unavoidable in this small world of easily accessible and encyclopedic music history, literature and other world cultures, but still interesting none the less.
I’m hesitant to pin point particular bands, because I’m sure you’ll have as much pleasure as I’ve had pin pointing which ones they are as a means of communicating your own adoration for this band.
As this album continues to bang and crash through my headphones, I’m getting more and more reluctant to talk about this, what I will say however is this. DO NOT STEAL THIS ALBUM! Treat yourself! Buy a lovely lush, high quality version in a CD or mp3 download, get the best sound system you have at your disposal and crank it up as loud as possible, it’s a classic. x
