Panic At The Disco – Pretty. Odd.
Tweet this! Now, before I start this, my first review: I am a bit of an emo.
I love Fall Out Boy, and I own a copy of The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance, so I was anticipating this album from when it was announced about nine months ago.
So when I finally got a copy of it I was deeply shocked by how strange and different it was to anything I have ever heard. The band have gone from the pretty teens of emo, to the twenty something reincarnations of The Beatles.
Gone are the synth and keyboard heavy songs, and in come strings, pianos and orchestral feel good tracks reminiscent of the hippy craze of the 1960s. Although a dramatic change of sound is not usually something many musicians would recommend (Robbie Williams Rudeboxx, which was essentially a rap album?) Panic manage to pull this off with incredible ease. Seeing as Im a fan of the emo genre, I was surprised that I enjoyed this album as much as I did.
This album is incredibly hard not to enjoy, as there are so many different genres on this album (American cabaret, Irish folk and psychedelic Beatles-esque pop), and every song is delightfully uplifting and cheery, which allows at least 8 of the 15 songs on the album to be a potential single. From the brilliantly light-hearted Were So Starving, to the aptly named Folkin Around which mixes incredible lyrics (if love is not enough to put my enemies to sleep / then Im putting out the lantern, find your own way home) with ukuleles and Brendan Uries pitch perfect voice.
Although this review is leaning more towards the perfect scores, the album is far from perfect, and although there is very little wrong with it as a whole, one or two songs seem a bit unfinished and rushed (From A Mountain In The Middle Of The Cabins mainly) and as there are fifteen songs, this is not a major problem, but they stop the album becoming truly mind-blowing and ground breaking.
Even though some of the songs are a bit hit and miss, overall, Pretty. Odd is the evidence of a truly outstanding and mature transformation from a band overly dependent on guy liner and dark lyrics, and although it will truly divide fans of Panic! At The Disco (exclamation mark and all) it has got me convinced that this is a terrific achievement. I want to encourage emo fans to buy this record, just to give them a different outlook on life. So guys, put the knives back in the drawer and buy this album, youll regret it if you dont.
